FUN FACTS: When feeling threatened, a bearded dragon will flatten its body against the ground, puff out its spiny throat, and open its jaws to make itself appear larger.

LOCATION / HABITAT: The bearded dragon is native to the semiarid woodland, arid woodland, and rocky desert regions of Central Australia.

BREEDING: Inland bearded dragons reach sexual maturity at 1 to 2 years of age. Females dig burrows and lay up to 24 eggs per clutch, with up to 9 clutches per year. They are bred in captivity to produce stunning color variations that fetch high prices.

BEHAVIOR: Bearded dragons have strong legs that enable them to lift their bodies completely off the ground while moving. They are skilled climbers and are often perched above the ground. They have a varied diet including insects, snails, slugs, other lizards, dead animals, as well as fruit, greens, vegetables, and flowers. In captivity, they are very docile and are among the most common reptiles in the pet trade.
