Pantherophis quadrivittatus 'Everglades Ratsnake'

From approximately 2001 through 2021, the eastern coastal lineage—including Florida ratsnakes—was widely called Pantherophis alleghaniensis. Later examination showed that the name-bearing specimen of alleghaniensis actually belonged to the more central inland lineage formerly called P. spiloides. Consequently:

• Pantherophis alleghaniensis now refers to the Central Ratsnake.
• Pantherophis quadrivittatus refers to the southeastern coastal and Florida lineage.
• The former P. spiloides effectively became P. alleghaniensis.
• The former eastern P. alleghaniensis became P. quadrivittatus.

This corrected arrangement was published in 2021 and adopted by the current 2025 SSAR scientific-name checklist. Recent genomic research also supports P. alleghaniensis and P. quadrivittatus as separate evolutionary lineages/species.
